Steering Laboratories of Patriotism and Discipline Towards Privatization is a Cause for Concern

Baytu MLA, AICC In-charge for Madhya Pradesh, and former Cabinet Minister Harish Chaudhary has expressed grave concern over the Central Government’s decision to open 100 new Sainik Schools under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
He stated that Sainik Schools are not merely educational institutions; rather, they serve as laboratories of patriotism, discipline, and dedication—places where dedicated and capable youth are groomed to defend the nation. Steering such institutions toward a market-driven model amounts to compromising their fundamental ethos.
Harish Chaudhary raised the question: Is it appropriate to entrust education linked to national security and military values into private hands? With increased participation from private entities under the PPP model, profit-making could become the primary objective, thereby posing a risk to the traditional identity, discipline, values, and national spirit of Sainik Schools.
He further noted that this decision could exacerbate social inequality. Private participation is likely to lead to an increase in fees and other expenses, making it difficult for talented children from economically weaker sections to access these institutions. The core objective of Sainik Schools has always been to provide equal opportunities to students from all sections of society. Expressing concern regarding the issue of accountability, he pointed out that while government institutions operate with clear oversight and transparency, responsibility becomes fragmented under the PPP model. Consequently, should there be a decline in quality or if the institutions deviate from their intended purpose, establishing accountability would prove to be a challenging task.
Chaudhary asserted that the very soul of Sainik Schools lies in their government patronage, rigorous discipline, and the clear objective of nation-building. If this foundational framework is undermined, the issue will cease to be merely about increasing the number of schools; rather, it will have an adverse impact on both the quality and the fundamental purpose of these institutions.
In conclusion, he urged the Central Government to opt for the path of direct government investment to expand the network of Sainik Schools, thereby ensuring equal opportunities for children from all sections of society and preserving the dignity and core ethos of these institutions intact.
