Major Initiative to Improve Traffic in Jaipur: Footpaths to be Cleared of Encroachments; AI-Based Monitoring Planned

Jaipur. The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has taken a significant step towards making the city’s traffic system modern, safe, and seamless. Several key decisions regarding traffic management, encroachment removal, the use of smart technology, and pedestrian facilities were taken during the 96th Traffic Control Board meeting held at the JDA headquarters, chaired by Development Commissioner Siddharth Mahajan.
It was clarified during the meeting that city footpaths would be reserved exclusively for pedestrians. The JDA’s enforcement wing will launch a special drive to remove illegal encroachments—such as dairy booths, ramps, staircases, and other obstructions—from footpaths to ensure safe and uninterrupted movement for citizens.
*City Traffic System to Transform via ATMP*
The implementation of the Area Traffic Management Plan (ATMP) was discussed in detail during the meeting. Under this plan, continuous and safe footpaths will be developed. Features such as green mesh fencing between roads and footpaths, low-level lighting, green belts, cycle tracks, seating arrangements, and modern urban amenities will be introduced.
Additionally, work will be undertaken to make internal roads signal-free by developing attractive roundabouts at selected intersections, thereby reducing traffic congestion and facilitating smoother travel.
*Action Against Illegal Parking and Encroachment*
The JDA has decided to clear illegal occupations and commercial activities currently taking place in the basement parking areas of major city malls, reserving these spaces strictly for parking. Furthermore, notices will be issued and action taken against encroachments—such as ramps, staircases, and grilles—in various commercial areas, including S.L. Marg.
*Parking Facilities to be Developed Under Flyovers*
A consensus was also reached during the meeting to utilize the vacant spaces beneath the city’s flyovers for developing parking facilities. Instructions were issued to develop these locations in keeping with the heritage theme, incorporating plans for planters, kiosks, attractive lighting, and general beautification.
*Zone-wise operation of 50,000 e-rickshaws*
To streamline the operations of the approximately 50,000 e-rickshaws running in the city, Jaipur will be divided into seven zones. Each e-rickshaw will feature a QR code-based system, including safety features like SOS alerts for the protection of women and passengers.
*Traffic monitoring via AI technology*
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology will be employed to make traffic management smarter. LED screens installed at major intersections will display information regarding pending traffic challans for vehicles, thereby encouraging compliance with traffic rules.
*Modern booths for traffic police*
Modern booths featuring a heritage aesthetic will be developed for the traffic police. These will be equipped with all necessary amenities—including separate washrooms—to ensure a better working environment for police personnel.
Senior officials from various departments and agencies attended the meeting, including Rajasthan Housing Board Commissioner Arvind Poswal, JDA Secretary Gaurav Saini, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pradeep Mohan Sharma, and Deputy Inspector General of Police Anand Sharma, alongside representatives from Jaipur Dairy, the Municipal Corporation, the Public Works Department, Smart City, the Transport Department, NHAI, MRC, JCTSL, and RIICO.
