Bharatiya Janata Party State Incharge, National General Secretary, and Rajya Sabha MP, Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agrawal, raised a burning, relevant, socio-economic issue concerning half of India’s population in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. He highlighted the issue of economic valuation of domestic work performed by women for the home and family, stating that the labor of women in the country has remained largely unnoticed, despite their significant contribution to society and the economy.
Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agrawal stated that women are the backbone of the family, the basic unit of Indian society. They play an invaluable role in managing the family, raising children, caring for the elderly, managing food, cleaning the house, and other daily chores. Despite this, these tasks receive no economic recognition and are not included in national income calculations. If the daily domestic work performed by millions of women in the country were economically evaluated, it would prove to be a significant contribution to India’s economy. Several international studies have also revealed that the unpaid domestic labor performed by women, if added to their economic value, could constitute a significant portion of any country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This contribution could be even more significant in a vast country like India.
Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agrawal, drawing the government’s attention, said that the time has come to recognize women’s domestic labor not just as a family responsibility but as a formal economic contribution. He suggested that the government should formulate a concrete policy in this direction so that the work of domestic women can be included in national income calculations.
Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agrawal said that instead of viewing women only with sympathy or pity, their labor should be respected. Society and the system must recognize that work done within the home is as important as work or business outside. If the government takes initiative in this direction, it will enhance women’s self-respect and reaffirm their role in society.

Dr. Radha Mohan Das Aggarwal also proposed in the Upper House that a minimum basic income system should be considered for domestic women. Such a system would provide women with financial security and recognize their contributions. This would strengthen the economic stability of families and enhance women’s social status. Today, millions of women in the country spend their entire day engaged in household and family responsibilities, yet they are considered financially dependent. This situation needs to change. If their labor is valued financially and they are provided with a minimum income, it would be a major step towards women’s empowerment.

Dr. Radha Mohan Das Aggarwal clarified that women should be respected not just through words, but through policy decisions. She urged the government and policymakers to engage in extensive discussions and take concrete steps to formally recognize women’s domestic labor and provide them with economic security. She emphasized that women play a vital role in India’s social and economic progress. If women’s contributions are truly acknowledged and they are given rights and respect, it will be extremely beneficial for the country’s overall development.
