Jaipur. Under the initiative of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and the direction of Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khinvsar, strict action is being taken against adulteration. In a major action, the Food Safety Department destroyed approximately one and a half lakh kilograms of expired Amul brand food items in Jaipur. It is noteworthy that these expired items were being prepared to be sold by erasing the date and replacing it with a new date, a complaint about which was received on the state government’s helpline 181.

Gayatri Rathore, Principal Secretary of Medical and Health Department, informed that the Food Safety Department is continuously carrying out major actions with the aim of providing pure food items to the general public. Recently, a citizen lodged a complaint on 181 helpline that in Kho Nagorian area of Jaipur, M/s Athlete Distributor is preparing to sell expired Amul brand food items. On this, the department sent the team of CMHO Jaipur, II for on-the-spot inspection.

Gayatri Rathod informed that the team found a huge quantity of food cartons in a big warehouse, which included many non-dairy food products of Amul brand like noodles, ketchup, mayonnaise, energy drinks etc., produced by M/s Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producer Union, Gujarat and supplied by M/s Advansys India Pvt Ltd. Around 12 thousand cartons were found with expired date, out of which the expiry date had been erased from the packets kept in 3000 cartons. Thinner, acetone, chemicals and other materials used for erasing the date were found on the spot. Gagan Ahuja, a businessman of M/s Athlete Distributor firm, was preparing to print a new date on this food item, fill it in 4500 new Amul brand cartons and sell it at a huge profit.

Food Safety Commissioner Dr. T. Shubhamangala stated that information was received about illegal food sales at this warehouse. Neighbors reported that after 10-12 employees entered the warehouse, the main gate remained closed until evening, and no one was allowed inside. The food license of M/s Athlete Store had expired.

Additional Commissioner Bhagwat Singh stated that the team was stunned to see such a large quantity of expired food. Upon questioning, Gagan revealed that he learned how to sell expired goods by changing the date on YouTube. Suspecting that expired food was being sold to the public, the team took samples, seized the food, machinery, and other items stored in the warehouse, and sealed the premises. Food business operations have been prohibited until further action is taken.

*A 4-day operation, 27 truckloads of goods destroyed*

Expired goods were destroyed because they were considered harmful to health. The expired products were destroyed at the firm’s own expense. The four-day operation involved loading 27 trucks and transporting the goods to the landfill.

Firms confirm erasing the expiry date*

Notices have been issued to representatives of both Kiara and Advanceis firms to take further action under the Food Safety and Standards Act. It is noteworthy that the firms deposited the destruction fee with the Municipal Corporation and presented receipts, upon which company representatives arrived on the spot and confirmed erasing the expiry date on expired Amul brand goods. He stated that Gagan Ahuja purchases near-expiry goods from his firm at throwaway prices.

*A complaint will be filed in court*

A complaint will be filed against the firm, Athlete Distributor, under Sections 26 and 27 of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 for storing expired products and printing new ones after erasing the expiry date for sale, for operating without a food license under Section 31, for removing seized products from the scene under Section 60, for violating Section 55 and for failing to comply with the Food Safety Officer’s guidelines. Further action will be taken under the provisions of the Act by issuing notices to the manufacturer and marketing firm, M/s Kiara District Co-operative Milk Producers Union, and the supplier firm, M/s Advansys India Private Limited, regarding the supply of food products to a firm without a food license and other irregularities.Food Safety Officers Sushil Chotwani, Vinod Tharwan, Ramesh Yadav, Rajesh Nagar, Nand Kishore Kumawat, and Awadhesh Gupta were involved in this action.
