Chief Justice of High Court Visits Tiger Reserve, Explores Nature and Conservation Efforts

Sanjay Pandey, Ranchi: The Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonek, visited the Palamu Tiger Reserve along with his wife on a two-day official tour, where he explored the region’s rich biodiversity and conservation initiatives.
During the visit, the Chief Justice toured the Betla National Park and several important tourism and conservation sites under the tiger reserve. He was warmly welcomed at Kechki by Deputy Director Prajeeshkant Jena at the scenic confluence of two rivers. A classical music and dance performance organized at the riverside added cultural charm to the occasion.
The Chief Justice later undertook an open jeep safari inside the forest, observing wildlife in their natural habitat and learning about conservation practices. He also spotted a palm civet resting on a Karam (Kadifolia) tree, reflecting the region’s rich biodiversity.
After a forest dinner, the Chief Justice stayed overnight at the Kechki Retreat Cottage. On the morning of February 22, 2026, he visited Betla again, where he interacted with trained elephants — Juhi, Rakhi, Sita and Murgesh — and learned about their role in conservation. He also fed fruits to the elephants as a gesture of affection.
The Chief Justice later visited the historic Palamu Fort, a symbol of the glorious heritage of the Chero dynasty, and reviewed its present condition and maintenance arrangements.
He also toured Kamaldah Lake, where a large number of migratory birds enhanced the natural beauty of the area. The Chief Justice expressed delight after observing several species of migratory waterfowl, including red-crested pochards and pintails.
During the tour, he reviewed the community-based livelihood initiative under the tiger reserve’s participatory development programme. He interacted with women enrolled in the residential beautician training course and young men undergoing electrician training, learning about their experiences and skill development.
The Chief Justice also visited the Mud House Oasis near Baksa Mor inside the forest area, where he appreciated locally produced lemongrass green tea.
Deputy Director Prajeeshkant Jena coordinated the arrangements throughout the two-day visit. The Chief Justice praised the tiger reserve authorities for their efforts in wildlife conservation, eco-tourism and community-based livelihood programmes, describing them as an excellent example of environmental protection and local development.
