Udaipur/Jaipur. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma stated that the entire world is currently facing the grave challenge of climate change. He noted that rising sea levels, steadily increasing temperatures, polluted air, contaminated water, and rapidly declining biodiversity pose a serious threat to the future of coming generations. In this context, transforming tree plantation and forest conservation into a mass movement is the need of the hour.
The Chief Minister was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the state-level ‘Van Mahotsav’ (Forest Festival) held at the Dudh-Talai forest range in Udaipur on Saturday. He remarked that forests are the foundation of human life and that environmental conservation is the shared responsibility of every citizen. To ensure a secure future for coming generations, tree plantation and forest conservation must be turned into a mass movement.
He added that the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (A Tree in Mother’s Name) campaign, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day, has heightened public awareness regarding the environment. This campaign symbolizes not only a commitment to the environment but also a spirit of reverence and dedication towards mothers. He stated that environmental conservation in the country has gained new momentum through initiatives such as the Nagar Van Yojana, CAMPA Fund, Green India Mission, and the National Afforestation Programme. The Prime Minister has also been honored with the ‘UN Champions of the Earth’ award for his environmental conservation initiatives.
*Chief Minister Plants Sandalwood Sapling, Launches Sandalwood Forest Project*
The Chief Minister inaugurated a sandalwood forest project—costing ₹33 crore—in the Dudh-Talai forest range by planting a sandalwood sapling. He stated that this project would provide a new direction for rural livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and the green economy, alongside environmental protection. In the first phase, four sandalwood forests will be developed across Udaipur, Sirohi, Banswara, and Pratapgarh; these will serve as exemplary initiatives for the entire country in the future.
The Chief Minister noted that the state government launched ‘Mission Hariyalo Rajasthan’ drawing inspiration from such initiatives by the Central Government. This campaign is working towards making the state greener and more prosperous. He mentioned that the mission targets planting 50 crore saplings over five years, with approximately 20 crore already planted in about two years. A target of planting 10 crore saplings has been set for this monsoon season as well.
He stated that to ensure the survival and growth of the planted saplings into trees, measures such as geo-tagging and regular monitoring through ‘Van Mitras’ (Forest Friends) and ‘Vriksh Mitras’ (Tree Friends) are being implemented. He added that ‘Namo Nurseries’ are being developed at every district headquarters, and ‘Namo Vans’ (Namo Forests) at the Panchayat Samiti level. These initiatives are expanding green cover in rural areas, with rural communities actively participating in environmental conservation.
The Chief Minister remarked that Rajasthan holds traditions and examples of environmental conservation unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Amrita Devi, along with her three daughters and 363 others, sacrificed their lives to save trees—an example of environmental and tree conservation unmatched in world history.
*Chief Minister Interacts with the Public*
The Chief Minister once again demonstrated his warmth and simplicity in his interactions with the public. Following the inauguration of the state-level Van Mahotsav in Udaipur, he walked through the city’s market. During this time, he inquired about the health of the elderly and affectionately interacted with children. The Chief Minister’s approachable demeanor sparked enthusiasm among the general public.
Citing the Skanda Purana, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma remarked that a stepwell is equivalent to ten wells, a pond to ten stepwells, a son to ten ponds, and a tree to ten sons. In Indian culture, nature has always been revered; there is a long-standing tradition of regarding the Earth as a mother, rivers as goddesses, and trees as divine. He noted that trees such as Peepal, Ashoka, Mango, and Bilva, along with festivals like Hariyali Teej, Basant Panchami, and Mahashivratri, symbolize our faith in and sensitivity towards nature and the environment.
The Chief Minister observed a welcome shift in society, noting that people are increasingly making tree plantation a part of their traditions on occasions such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and memorial days. This change indicates that tree plantation is evolving from a mere government program into a social value. He emphasized that when we plant a sapling, we are not merely planting a tree but safeguarding the breath, environment, and future of generations to come.
He also called upon the people of the state to actively participate in environmental conservation and the ‘Mission Hariyalo Rajasthan’ by planting as many trees as possible during this monsoon season under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (A Tree in Mother’s Name) campaign.
During the event, the Chief Minister ceremonially handed over a cheque for ₹6 crore—intended to boost livelihoods—to 600 self-help groups across 13 districts under the Rajasthan Forestry and Biodiversity Project. Earlier, he viewed an exhibition showcasing sandalwood trees, forest produce, and ‘Panch Gaurav’ (five elements of pride); inaugurated the drone seeding process; and inspected the forest area using binoculars from a watchtower.
Present at the event were Tribal Area Development Minister Babulal Kharadi; Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Sanjay Sharma; MPs Mannalal Rawat and Chunnilal Garasiya; MLAs Shrichand Kriplani, Phool Singh Meena, Tarachand Jain, Udaylal Dangi, and Shanta Amritlal Meena; along with local public representatives, senior officials, and members of the general public.
