The facts presented by the government in response to a question asked by Baytu MLA Harish Chaudhary during the Rajasthan Assembly’s Question Hour on Monday are extremely worrying for the state’s farmers. According to the government, a total of 2,220 samples of fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides collected from various locations in the state for the years 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26 (until January 2026) were found to be substandard.
*Questions about the quality of agricultural inputs being provided to farmers*
In this regard, MLA Harish Chaudhary issued a press release stating that this data itself is proof that serious questions are being raised about the quality of agricultural inputs being provided to farmers in the state. Farmers are already grappling with difficult circumstances such as weather uncertainty, water shortages, and ever-increasing farming costs. In such a situation, if they receive poor or substandard seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, their entire crop and a year’s worth of hard work are at stake.

Chaudhary said that he had expected a clear answer and a concrete action plan from the government on this serious issue, but the government has not presented a satisfactory roadmap to resolve this problem. This is understandable, causing concern and dissatisfaction among farmers.

Chaudhary also said that when thousands of samples have been found to be substandard, it is essential to ensure strict legal action and stringent punitive provisions against those selling counterfeit or substandard agricultural inputs. Furthermore, a regular, transparent, and effective quality inspection system for agricultural inputs should be strengthened throughout the state to prevent losses to farmers.

Harish Chaudhry said that the government responded in the House that there is no provision for compensating farmers for losses caused by substandard or substandard agricultural inputs. He stated that if the government abdicates this responsibility, who will provide justice to the farmers? When a government minister states in the House that there is no provision for compensation, it is a very unfortunate situation for the state.
Harish Chaudhary stated that farmers do not simply want announcements, but rather, they demand justice, transparency, and security. It is the government’s responsibility to implement strict legislation and an effective monitoring system to protect farmers from counterfeit and substandard agricultural inputs, so that farmers’ confidence can be maintained.
