Rajasthan’s ‘Udaan Scheme’ showed the way to the country, now the central government should implement it nationwide: Former Chief Minister

The State View Jaipur (Sunil Sharma) Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has wholeheartedly welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision declaring menstrual health a ‘fundamental right’ and ordering the distribution of free sanitary pads in schools across the country. Gehlot also described it as a historic and revolutionary decision towards women’s empowerment and a life of dignity.
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot further said that he is proud that his previous Congress government, prioritizing the health of the daughters and women of the state, had launched the ‘I Am Shakti Udaan Scheme’. Through this scheme, Rajasthan became the first state in the country to take the bold and historic step of providing free sanitary napkins to all eligible women and students.

The former Chief Minister further said:
“Today, this decision of the court is a victory for our progressive thinking and vision. When we started this scheme in Rajasthan, our goal was to bring women’s health rights into the mainstream. Now, with this intervention by the court, crores of girls in the country will get health security and equal opportunities in education.”
Ashok Gehlot urged the central and state governments to adopt this model on the lines of Rajasthan. He said that the central and state governments should not limit themselves to only girls, but should implement a nationwide scheme to provide free sanitary napkins to all women in the country so that there is a change in the social mindset towards women’s health.

During the Congress government, the Udaan scheme was announced in the 2021-22 budget to provide sanitary napkins to all women in the state, for which a budget provision of Rs 200 crore was made. After the BJP government came to power in the state, this scheme stalled. Ashok Geholot said that after the Supreme Court’s decision, the BJP government of Rajasthan should now operate this scheme as before. He expressed confidence that this decision would not only increase the attendance of girls in schools but would also prove to be a “milestone” in the field of women’s empowerment.
