The country’s largest and most modern ‘Goat Semen Lab’ to be established in Ramsar

Jaipur. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s Rajasthan government has taken a major step to promote the animal husbandry sector in the state and increase the productivity of improved small ruminants, especially goats. Under the centrally sponsored scheme, the National Livestock Mission (NLM), the country’s largest and most modern ‘Goat Semen Production Laboratory’ will be established at the State Animal Breeding Farm in Ramsar, Ajmer. This will be India’s largest laboratory, producing two lakh doses annually. Financial approval has been issued for the establishment of this modern laboratory. It will cost ₹875 lakh, with the central government contributing 60 percent and the Rajasthan government contributing 40 percent. The primary objective of this lab is to promote artificial insemination (AI) using semen from high genetically high-quality goats.

The Rajasthan government has entered into an important strategic partnership with Uttar Pradesh to operate the laboratory in accordance with world-class technical and scientific standards. A copy of the MoU was handed over to joraram Kumawat, Cabinet Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Devasthan Department. This technical collaboration has been signed with the Uttar Pradesh Government’s ‘UP Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Veterinary Science University and Cow Research Institute (DUVASU), Mathura.’
Speaking on the occasion, Cabinet Minister Zoraram Kumawat said, “This agreement will prove to be a milestone in the history of Rajasthan’s animal husbandry sector. Leveraging the technical expertise of Mathura University, we will develop the Ramsar (Ajmer) Farm into one of the best goat semen centers in the country.” He explained that Rajasthan has approximately 20 million goats, representing 16% of India’s total population. Rajasthan is also the second largest state in the country in terms of goat population. This will help in the genetic improvement of the state’s traditional and renowned goat breeds, such as the Sirohi, Marwari, and Jakharana breeds. With the help of two lakh doses, artificial insemination of goats will reach the doorsteps of animal breeders in remote villages across the state. The use of scientifically prepared semen will curb many infectious and genetic diseases prevalent in goats. This state-run farm in Ajmer will now emerge as a national hub. With the launch of this project, animal breeders not only from Rajasthan but also from neighboring states will benefit. The government aims to fully operate this lab by December 2026. The aim is to make it functional. The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. Suresh Kumar Meena, Director of Animal Husbandry Department, Dr. Preetpal Singh Kalra, Manager of Rajasthan Livestock Development Board, Dr. Abhijeet Mitra, Vice Chancellor of Uttar Pradesh Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Veterinary Science University, and Dr. Mukul Anand, in-charge of Mathura Lab Goat Semen Lab.
