About National Handloom Day

Handlooms have been a symbol of ancient India’s economic and cultural excellence. In ancient times, Indian handloom textiles were a major center of attraction for Western countries. The Swadeshi Movement was launched in the Town Hall of Calcutta on August 7, 1905, with the aim of adopting Swadeshi during British rule.  In commemoration of this historic event, the Government of India has been celebrating National Handloom Day every year on August 7th since 2015. This day is an occasion to honor the country’s rich weaving heritage and the social, economic, and cultural contributions of weavers. According to the Fourth All India Handloom Census (2019-20), there are 35.22 lakh handloom weavers and allied workers employed in the country, of whom more than 72 percent are women. Rajasthan has 8,770 weavers associated with the handloom industry. The state is renowned nationwide for its exquisite handloom products such as Kota Doria, Pattu, Khes, Reza, Latta, Bardi, blankets, Loi, shawls, Bagru and Sanganeri printed fabrics, durries, and carpets.
