Intensive Care Unit (ICU) services in the state’s hospitals are set to be further strengthened to ensure that critically ill patients receive quality medical care and that medical management during emergency situations is conducted more effectively. To this end, a set of standard guidelines is currently being drafted. During a meeting held via video conference on Friday—presided over by Gayatri Rathore, Principal Secretary of the Department of Medical and Health—discussions regarding these guidelines were held with experts, and their suggestions were solicited.
The Principal Secretary stated that suggestions regarding ICU services have been sought from specialist doctors at medical colleges, Chief Medical and Health Officers, and ICU In-charges. Based on these suggestions, a draft of the guidelines will be prepared and forwarded to the Central Government, which will then serve as the basis for formulating the final standard guidelines.
Dr. Ravi Prakash Sharma, Director of Public Health, explained that the guidelines will encompass various aspects of ICU services, including infection prevention, appropriate care for critically ill patients, the availability of trained staff, improvements in patient monitoring, organ support technologies, and capacity enhancement to ensure the immediate availability of treatment. Furthermore, special emphasis will be placed on the availability and operational readiness of equipment essential for monitoring each patient—such as multipara monitors, oxygen supply systems, suction facilities, and IV pumps—as well as emergency life-support devices like ventilators, defibrillators, and oxygen cylinders.
Attendees at the meeting included Dr. Madhu Rateshwar (Director, RCH), Dr. Narottam Sharma (Additional Director, Administration), Heads of various departments at SMS Hospital, members of the Technical Committee, Project Directors, Critical Care In-charge doctors from various medical colleges, and representatives from both the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and private hospitals.
