The Consumer Affairs Department conducted a total of 26 inspections in relation to net content on manufacturer and packer firms prepacking spices, oil, flour, namkeen, dairy cream, milk, tea leaves, etc. to ensure consumers receive the correct weight in prepackaged goods under the Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011. The inspections were conducted on 26 firms under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011. Under the Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011, cases were registered against firms for not producing verification certificates and verified weights and measures, and on-the-spot notices were issued against them, resulting in a fine of ₹2,78,500.
The purpose of on-the-spot notice inspections against firms under the Packaged Commodities Rules is to motivate traders to use correct weights and measures in the best interest of consumers, as well as to inform consumers about their fundamental rights and protect their interests. Consumers have a legal right to the purity, quality, standard, quantity, and correct weights of any service or goods obtained for a fee. Consumers can complain to the Consumer Affairs Department for violations of these rights.
